It started a little slowly but boy did it pick up and suck me in. I thought it could have been longer, like a saga. I would've liked to see more of what Abigail Lannigan and Destiny Fairchild had lived through in their lives. The bits I did read made for a rich story. The perspective of Abigail in the second half of the book was really interesting and fun! I don't much care for detailed sex does descriptions, but at least they weren't gratuitous. Hopefully they don't get more and more descriptive as the series continues. I know publishers think this is what sells but there is a large readership that prefers plot to titillation. Ill definitely read the next book. This one was truly satisfying.

Abigail and her brother were twins. Her father favored male children and didn't believe women were able to do anything but cook , clean and have children. She ask her father to let her help around the farm because she was more capable than her brother Will he was scared. When her mom died she had to beg to stay in school and get her education. When she became of age , her father wanted her to marry into a affluent family. She liked the guy alright but did not love him. She was able to leave the farm with assistance from her teacher and brother. Years later after the loss of her brother she finds herself alone. She befriends her neighbor Destiny and the young woman who is just as alone helps her. This book travels between youth and adult Abigail. This story gave a lot of thought about how men needed sons on the farm and what women should be in that time. It also looked into the greed of families . I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the continuing story.
Once again, Bette Lee Crosby writes about an ordinary woman with an ordinary life, but makes it fascinating with all the twists and turns this novel takes the reader through. One cannot put it down. It is easy reading and catches your interest from page one. Abigail Anne's life is one of sadness, but she finds in her later years a friendship with the young Destiny Fairchild that makes her happy. There is some mystery, but I won't go into that or it would spoil the ending. Some characters are easy to love and some are despicable. All in all, this is a great start to the Serendipity series. Cannot wait to read the next book. This author knows how to capture your imagination and keeps your interest throughout all of her series.
The Twelfth Child (Serendipity #1) by Bette Lee Crosby -

She is born as a twin to a father and his wife. Her father is not one for female children and so her twin brother is her father's favorite. Sadly, her mother dies at a very young age and she is raised by her father, and always biding for his attention in anyway she can. Abigail always enjoyed learning and while her mother was alive, she attended school and became very close with her teacher. As time passed after her mother's death, her father wanted her to get married and to forget about an education. She informs her teacher of her father's wishes and the teacher helps her by arranging for her to live and assist an elderly friend in Virginia. Abigail did keep in touch with her twin brother. Then one day the elderly friend lost her money and passed away which left Abigail homeless. Then one day a young woman after talking to Abigail offered her a job and Abigail became a dancer in a club. She did so good that she was able to pay her bills and get a place to live and then the club closed so she took to spending time at the library and ended up getting a job there where she met a nice young man but, then she found out he was married and she refused to fall in love again and lived a very lonely life. Her father dies leaving everything to her brother and it was a huge inheritance. Abigail's brother dies shortly after their father and Abigail is given the inheritance. Then Destiny moves in across the street and she and Abigail become extremely good friends, so much so that Abigail decided to give Destiny full access and control of her checking account. Abigail also starts giving Destiny stuff that she no longer uses or needs. Destiny starts taking care of Abigail, taking her shopping, doctor etc.. Before Abigail's brother dies a very distant cousin was coming around and constantly asking Abigail for money and she would give him $500.00 here and there. Then Abigail passes away but, before she does she writes a note to Destiny. You have to read this book to get the whole story and to find out what happens to Destiny after Abigail passes away. I truly loved this book!!!!
Now 88 years old and virtually all alone in the world, Abigail Lannigan is happy to meet her new neighbor Destiny Fairchild. Despite over 50 years' age difference, the two become quick and close friends.

After Abigail's death, Destiny inherits all of her money and possessions. Yet because there was no official will, there are many - chiefly Abigail's long-lost distant "nephew" Elliott Emerson - who are determined to fight Destiny to the end.

Watching from the afterlife, Abigail is distraught yet unable to do a single thing except let things take their course. She regales readers with her thoughts on the proceedings, alternating with the often painful story of her childhood and young adult years.

Although Crosby has numerous books, this is the first of hers I have read, and I was not disappointed! The writing is real, detailed and engaging, with three-dimensional characters. I will definitely look into other books.
I loved this book! It has so many twists and surprises I could hardly put it down. I already miss Abigail, she is such a lovely lady. I wish she was my neighbor...… I'd take care of her, too! And Destiny...… what a wonderful, kind friend to Abigail. Again, I would love to have her as a neighbor also! There is evil in this book, too. Mean and evil people exist, but karma seems to have a way of evening things out! {said with a big smile!} I hope you will read this wonderful book and love it as much as I did!
